   Michael Edward Mattel, 64, of Northridge, California, died Oct. 6, 2009, in Portland, Oregon, at the Veterans Medical Center of complications of liver failure while awaiting a transplant.
He was born March 18, 1945, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, a son of Louis and Sylvia Goldenberg Mattel. He grew up in the Los Angeles area and graduated from high school there. He joined the Navy the day after he graduated from high school and was stationed with the Marines as a corpsman. While as corpsman, he was infected with Hepatitis C which continued to affect his life and eventually led to his death. He was the recipient of the Purple Heart for injuries he received while serving in Vietnam.
After returning to the United States, he worked a phlebotomist where he met Gail Weaver. They were married May 21, 1982, in Egin, Idaho. The marriage was later solemnized in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple.
He returned to college and received a bachelor’s degree in sociology from California State University at Northridge. He also did postgraduate work. He worked from 1984 until illness forced to retire as a rehabilitation counselor for developmental disabled adults. He really enjoyed the work and was admired by his clients.
He joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in January 1982. He was a high priest. He served as a member of a bishopric, ward clerk and in Primary for many years as a teacher and pianist.
He was never was afraid of a challenge and enjoyed learning new things. He loved computers, birding, chess and studied foreign languages such as Spanish and Armenian. He enjoyed coming to Idaho each year to help with potato planting and harvesting. He loved jazz. He helped take care of his mother who is 95 years old. He enjoyed his many nieces and nephews and was always interested in what was occurring in their lives.
Survivors include his wife Gail Weaver Mattel of Northridge, California; his mother, Sylvia Mattel of  Los Angeles, California; a son and a daughter from a previous marriage, Stacey Monyei (Sidney) of Culver City, California, and Adam Mattel, Boiling Springs, Pennsylvania; mother-in-law, Delila Weaver of Egin; sisters & Brother-in-laws, Judith Mattel of Arizona, Janet Goodliffe (Marvin) of Rexburg, Dan Weaver of Egin, Betty Ann Gerard (Kevin) of Lewisville, Alan Weaver of Burbank, Washington, and Miles J. (Sherrie) Weaver; and many nieces and nephews.He was preceded in death by his father; a brother, Richard Mattel; and father-in-law, Miles Weaver, and a nephew, Stefan Weaver.
Services will be Monday, Oct. 12 at 11 a.m. at the Egin Bench LDS Ward Chapel in Egin Bench under the direction of Bidwell Funeral Home of St. Anthony. The family will meet friends from 10 a.m. until services on Monday. Burial will be in the Parker Cemetery with military rites. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that individuals make a commitment to be an organ donor for the many deserving individuals that are in need of transplants.
