Bonnie Lynne Grass Nielsen 67 passed away suddenly Jan. 28, 2010 at her home in Rexburg
She was born May 14, 1942 in Salt Lake City, Utah to Harry Vernon Grass and Eleanor Anne Meyers Grass. She grew up in the Salt Lake, Utah, and Cache Valleys. She moved to Rexburg, Idaho in March 1973.
She married Kenneth Lamar Searcy in the Salt Lake Temple. They later divorced. From this union she became the mother of five sons.
Since her baptism, she was always an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. She began her life of service at the age of 12 as a Primary teacher. Among her many callings she served as a Relief Society Pres., Counselor, & Visiting Teacher; Young Women’s Pres. & Counselor; she taught in all the organizations, served as a Stake Extraction Director and as a Temple Ordinance Worker in the Idaho Falls and Rexburg Temples.
She was employed at Ricks College/BYU-Idaho for 28 years. In her various assignments she assisted thousands of students and was heavily involved in coordinating school and community programs. She began her employment in the Student Employment-Financial Aid Office in June 1974. After three years she was appointed as Director of Student Financial Aid. While serving in that capacity her responsibilities included being the Foreign Student Advisor, Student Employment Director, Veteran Affairs Officer, and Bureau of Indian Affairs Officer. She also served two consecutives terms as Pres. of the Idaho Assoc. of Student Financial Aid Administrators. She served two terms on the Board of Directors of the Western States Assoc. of Student Financial Aid Administrators; and was also a trainer for other Financial Aid Administrators in 8 western states. In 1994 she left the Student Financial Aid Office to serve as the Summer School Specialist. A year later she became an Assistant Dean of Students. At the time of her retirement she was an Assistant Director of Student Activities for the Leadership and Service Institute. She also served as the Community Outreach Coordinator for the same department.
She was a member of the Daughters of Utah Pioneers, Valeska Camp; and The Art Guild.
On July 20, 2002, she married for time and eternity to Harold Kalmar Nielsen, in the Idaho Falls Temple, by his son, Ronald Nielsen. Harold was the love and joy of her life. They had a vibrant marriage and packed a lifetime of living into the 2½ years they had together in mortality. They enjoyed traveling together, gardening, photography, and their walks in the Nature Park. He was a retired Ricks College physics, math, photography and astronomy instructor. He passed away February 6, 2005.
She was always learning and becoming proficient at new things. Her greatest work and service was for her family. Her ultimate life’s accomplishment was as a single parent the rearing of her five sons. She took great joy in them and their many positive accomplishments. She always enjoyed visiting and being with her grandchildren and great-grandchild(ren). She also found much happiness in her acquired Nielsen family.

She is survived by sons; Robert Vernon (Lori Jo) Rexburg, ID; William Irvin (Debora), Magna, UT; Barryngton Eugene, Boise, ID; Martin Lyle (Stephanie) Spanish Fork, UT, & David Joseph (Pamela) Searcy, Havre, MT. She also leaves behind 21 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild(ren)
She is also survived by step-children; Ronald (Ruby), Douglas (Jeanne), Jim (Tammy), Kelly (Delightra), H. Kriss (Peggy), and Rocky (Adele) Nielsen; Tonnette Nielsen Taylor (Robert) & Trudy Nielsen Bidwell (John). 50 Nielsen Grandchildren and 89 Nielsen Great-grandchildren.
Sisters; Gloria (George) Stone, Rexburg, ID; Dixie (Grant) Person, Spokane, WA; Patricia (Rodney) Cuthbert, Pembroke, FL; Rebecca (Craig) Johnson, Cedar Hills, UT; & Julie (Gaylen) Somers, Rigby, ID; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold K. Nielsen; parents, and grandparents.
There will be a viewing Tuesday evening from 7 to 8:30 at the Rexburg 11th LDS Ward Chapel under the direction of Bidwell Funeral Home. Funeral Services will be in the Rexburg 11th Ward at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday Feb. 3, 2010 located at 590 Summerwood Dr. with Bishop Kevin Anderson, officiating. Interment will be in the Sutton Archer Cemetery.
