Charlie Harris

 

   Charles Henry Harris 91, a long time resident of St. Anthony, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 9, 2010 at his home surrounded by his family and the care of Creekside Hospice.

Charlie was born Dec. 1, 1919 in Cumberland, Rhode Island to George and Lucia Harris. He attended school in Pawtucket, Rhode Island up until the 9th Grade when he quit school to help support his brothers and sisters during the depression. He later joined the Civilian Conservation Corp where he earned his GED and became a mechanic and drove ambulance. He then returned to Rhode Island and started working as a ship builder in Newport, News Rhode Island until Apr. of l944 when he joined the US Navy and served in a PT Squadron in the South Pacific. After WW2 he returned to Rhode Island where he worked in construction and as a truck driver.

In l956 he met Carlyn Sykes in Billerica Massachusetts . They traveled to Idaho and were married July 18, 1957 in Winnemucca Nevada. They moved in the St. Anthony area in l960 where they purchased a home and raised a family of 4 girls and 4 boys.

He worked at several different jobs including, carpentry, the city of St. Anthony, owned a mechanic/radiator repair shop and a roofing and insulation business. At the age of 71 he started working for the US Forest Service where he worked for 16 years retiring at the age of 87.
He was a life long member of the St. Anthony Yellowstone V.F.W. post 9425 and active member of the American Legion post 22. He has served as commander in both organizations. He held many positions both local and state wide for both the VFW and American Legion. He proudly volunteered many hours selling poppies and helping out the VFW Christmas program, and placing flags around town on holidays. he also help renovate the VFW hall and the upper Valley Baptist Church in St. Anthony.

He is survived by his wife Carlyn of St. Anthony, Children - Teresa Niendorf, Arco, ID.; Frances Harris, James Harris, Eugene (Jean) Harris, Timothy Harris, Donna (Francisco) Lopez, and Frank Harris all of St. Anthony, ID.; Linda (Eric) Swensen, Burley, ID.; Sisters - Lucia Jones, Seeknok, Mass.; Teresa Lavasor, Pawtucket, Rhode Island and brother - Eugene Harris, Seekonk, Rhode Island, 21 Grandchildren and 20 Great Grandchildren. Besides his parents he was preceded in death by 3 brothers and two infant sons.

Services will be conducted Friday, Nov. 13 at 1:00 p.m. in the Bidwell Funeral Home. Friends may call at the Funeral Home one hour prior to the Services. Burial will be in the St. Anthony Riverview Cemetery where military rites will be performed by the St. Anthony Yellowstone Mountain Post 9425 and the American Legion Post 22.
