   Gene Mathie, our beloved dad, grandpa, brother and friend. A former resident of St. Anthony passed away suddenly of natural causes on April 3, 2011 at his home near Shelley, Idaho.
Gene was born February 25, 1935 at Howe, Idaho to Ferd and Lucille Brown Mathie. He was the third of 9 children. At the young age of 12 he worked alongside his father and siblings for Shane and Bette Linderman for a number of years. He grew up in the Teton Valley where he attended school and went onto graduate from Driggs High School in 1949. He joined the Army in 1954 serving three years active duty as an army ranger engineer. After two and a half years of service in Germany, he was honorably discharged as an E-4 specialist. He then went to California and drove truck for Mount Hamilton Observatory for two years. Moving back to Idaho, he married Virginia Grende and made a home in St. Anthony where they raised 2 sons and 4 daughters. Gene went to work for Western Construction where he devoted 23 years of his life. After retiring, he enjoyed working and helping his friends farm throughout the Teton Basin.
Gene and Virginia relocated to Shelley, Idaho in 2005. He loved working in his yard, tackling the garden and reading in between naps. He was proud of everything he accomplished throughout his life with no regrets, and was admired by all who knew him. Dad will be deeply missed.
He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Gene is survived by his Children, Stacey (Crissy) Harris, St. Anthony, Idaho.; Suzette(Ken) McCay, Newdale, ID.; Lona Mathie, Idaho Falls, ID.; Shelly Mathie, Shelley, ID.; Two sisters, Lela (Charlie) Hepner, Dalmation, PA.; Ellen (Ron) Hedin, Nibbley, UT.; Five brothers, Bob (Janet) Mathie, Richfield, UT.; Bill (Margaret) Mathie, Layton, UT.; Dennis (Pat) Mathie, Maricopa, AZ.; Ronnie Mathie, Idaho Falls, ID.; LaVere (Janet) Mathie, Layton, UT.; 11 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.
Besides his parents he was preceded in death by his wife Virginia, son (Ronnie), daughter (Tauna), granddaughter (Rawna) and sister Ruby.
Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, April 9, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. in the St. Anthony 3rd and 4th LDS Ward Chapel . Friends may call at the Bidwell Funeral Home Friday evening from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. and again at the Church Saturday one hour prior to the services at the Church. Military graveside services will be conducted in the St. Anthony Riverview Cemetery by the St. Anthony V.F.W. and American Legion.
